BIOGRAPHY
Erica graduated with honors from Miami University of Ohio and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Environmental Principles and Practices. She was a 2013 Teach For America corps member in Eastern North Carolina and served her commitment at Northwest Halifax High School as a special education science teacher. Afterward, she moved to the Wake County Public School System and was a special education reading teacher at Garner Magnet High School where she served on the School Improvement Team, Instructional Leadership Team, and the Media and Technology Advisory Committee. During the 2019-2020 school year, Erica was the Principal Resident at River Bend Middle School located in Raleigh. Currently, Erica is serving as the seventh and eighth grade special education English Language Arts teacher at A.C. Reynolds Middle School in Asheville, NC.
Erica was born and raised in New Providence, New Jersey. She attended Salt Brook Elementary School, New Providence Middle School, and New Providence High School. Erica always enjoyed traveling to new places and learning about new and different cultures. With this strong interest, Erica wanted to attend a university out of state and pursue a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. She graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 2013. During her education at Miami, she studied abroad for the fall semester of 2011 in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India. She studied and participated in Tibetan and Indian cultures and traditions. During Erica’s senior year, she was approached by a Teach For America (TFA) recruiter. She applied, was accepted, and placed in Eastern North Carolina as a Special Education Science teacher. Her two years in Halifax County were amazing and arduous. She could not have imagined a better opportunity to start her career in education. Although Erica has traveled to many places around the world and participated in many cultures and traditions, she did not realize the injustices occurring in the United States until her time in TFA. This realization compelled Erica to stay in education after completing her two-year commitment with TFA. Erica’s mission that all students will have the opportunity to receive an equitable and rigorous education in the United States fuels her journey in educational leadership. She is honored and grateful to be a Wake Principal Leadership Program Fellow. Through this program, she has learned and acquired the skills needed to lead schools in providing the equitable and rigorous education that every child deserves. She is excited to begin her educational leadership career in North Carolina. |
